Adolescence is a time of transition toward adulthood. Here at Town Pediatrics it is our goal to provide an environment that both recognizes and supports our teenagers as they evolve and learn to become more knowledgeable and independent. During this phase of development, most teenagers are healthy but many express concerns or have questions about their health that they may wish to discuss in a confidential manner. It is our policy to respect those wishes in a way that is healthy and safe and abide by state law for adolescent confidentiality. Our environment is such that it provides your teenager the opportunity to become more comfortable speaking alone with their healthcare provider, as they will need to do independently once that they are adults. As part of this process, we also strongly believe that through your teen’s evolution, you (as their parents) still expect and need to be involved in your adolescent’s healthcare as much as possible. We understand the importance of this dynamic and as part of our practice will encourage your teen to include their parents through any decision-making process.

In order to respect both adolescent privacy rights as well as parental concerns regarding involvement in their child’s decision making, we here at Town Pediatrics have developed a policy that is consistent with Virginia State law as well as policies established by the Society for Adolescent Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics. We will provide a copy of the full policy at the 12th year Well child exam, this will give us the opportunity to discuss it with you and your teen. Links to these policies can be found below.

We consider it a privilege to take care of your teen and look forward to continuing to work together as your adolescent grows and matures.
